1. Turn off or disable Visual Effects

Visual effects use computer system resources, which causes computer system performance degradation. You can turn off visual effects on the windows computer to get better speed and performance.

  2. Open ‘Control Panel’ and click on ‘system’.
  3. From the ‘System’ window, find ‘Advanced system settings’ and click.
  4. Now from the ‘System Properties’ window, under ‘Performance‘, find ‘Settings..’ and click.
  5. From the ‘Performance option’ window under the ‘Visual Effects’ tab, select the ‘Adjust for best performance’ option to turn off Visual Effects.

Important Notes:
Remember, the above option will also affect the display quality of your computer fonts. If you want readable font, you can select the ‘Custom’ options and check only the Smooth edges of screen fonts

You can use various methods to open the “System Properties’’ window. To open System Properties using run command first open Run dialog box.

  1. Press ‘Windows + R’ short cut key from the keyboard to open Run command.
  2. Now type ‘sysdm.cpl’ and click on the Ok button.

This way you can open the ‘System Properties’ window.

2. Stop unnecessary programs run at startup

Software manufacturers designed some software to start automatically when Windows start. These programs always run in the background. People cannot see them running on their system. Sometimes, some unnecessary programs degrade computer performance by occupying memory and slow down the windows booting time. You can speed up computer performance by removing these programs from the startup.

For this purpose, you need to open the Task manager on windows OS.

  1. Press ‘Ctrl+Shift+Esc‘ the short cut key from the Keyboard to open the ‘Task Manager’.
  2. From the ‘Task Manager’ window, go to the ‘Startup’ tab.
  3. Check your programs that are run with windows startup.
  4. Find the unnecessary one and disabled the status.

This way you can limit the programs that run on startup.

3. Uninstalled unused applications or programs

If you noticed carefully about the installed applications on your computer, you can see there are some applications, which you do not use. Computer manufacturers use to install these programs on a computer. This software can slow down your computer speed by consuming computer processor power, by occupying precise memory spaces as well as disk space.

You can speed up computer performance by uninstalling the unused application. Find the unnecessary applications and uninstalled them from the computer to make your computer faster.

To uninstall the software from the computer, first, you need to open the ‘Control Panel’.

  1. Type control panel on the windows search bar, click on Control Panel App.
  2. From the ‘Control Panel’ window find ‘Programs and Features’ and click.
  3. Now you have a new window called ‘Programs and Features’. Here, you can see all the installed programs and applications on the computer system.
  4. Find the unused program from the list and select the program.
  5. Now click on ‘Uninstall’.

4. Use Disk Defragmenter

In the computer, fragmentation occurs automatically while you are using it. Fragmentation slows down the computer speed. In fragmentation, files are scattered in a different location of the hard disk drive. If you want to use a file on your computer that is fragmented, it takes time for Windows to arrange them before running. Hence, you need to defragment your fragmented files on the hard drive.

A disk defragmenter program can reduce the file access time from a hard disk drive by arranging them in contiguous blocks. This way, you can enhance the overall system performance by running Disk Defragmenter periodically on your computer.

To run disk defragmenter

  1. First, open ‘This PC’ or ‘My Computer’ on the PC.
  2. Now select the drive, on which you wish to run Disk defragmentation.
  3. Right-click and select ‘Properties’.
  4. Go to the ‘Tools’ tab.
  5. It is time to find “Defragment now…” (Windows 7 OS) or “Optimize”. (Windows 10) under the ‘Tools’ tab and click.

5. Clean the hard disk drive

If your hard drive is almost full (approximately 90%), it can slow down your PC speed. You must remove unnecessary files from the hard drive to increase the disk space. By increasing disk space on the hard drive, you can speed up computer performance.

On Windows 10 Operating system computer you can use the ‘Disk cleanup’ program to remove junk and unnecessary files.

To run a Disk clean up

  1. First, open ‘This PC’ or ‘My Computer’ on the PC.
  2. Now select the drive you want to run disk Cleanup. This is usually Local Disk(C:) where windows OS is installed.
  3. Right-click and select ‘Properties’.
  4. Go to the ‘General’ tab and find ‘Disk Cleanup’.
  5. Now click on ‘Disk Cleanup’.

6. Avoid using multiple programs at the same time

This one is another reason, which limits your computer performance. Running multiple programs simultaneously can degrade computer performance. They consume more memory space and resources of a computer, which slows down the computer performance.

If you feel that your computer becomes slow while using, you can close some applications on the computer. This way, you can increase your windows performance. Hence, if it is not necessary always avoid running multiple programs at the same time.

7. Check for computer malware or viruses

11. Disable search indexing

You can disable the search index service on windows PC. To disable search index on windows

  1. Press ‘Windows + R’ short cut key from the keyboard to open Run command.
  2. Type ‘services.msc’ and click on the Ok button.
  3. Now from the ‘Services’ window, find the ‘Windows Search’ service from the list. Select it.
  4. Right-click on ‘Windows Search’, go to the ‘Properties’ option.
  5. From the ‘Windows Search Properties (Local Computer)’ window, under the service status click on the ‘Stop’ button.

This way you can disable search indexing service on windows PC.

12. Check virtual memory size

Sometimes, by increasing virtual memory size you can speed up computer performance. You can set the virtual memory on windows PC by using the following steps.

  1. Open ‘Control Panel’ and click on ‘system’.
  2. From the ‘System’ window, find ‘Advanced system settings’ and click.
  3. Now from the ‘System Properties’ window, under performance finds ‘Settings..’ and click.
  4. From the ‘Performance option’ window go to the ‘Advanced‘ tab.
  5. Under Virtual memory click on ‘Change’.
  6. Now from the new ‘Virtual Memory’ window uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives checkbox.
  7. Now under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file.
  8. Select ‘Custom size’ radio button, enter the Initial size and Maximum size in MB.
  9. Click Ok.

13. Replace the old hard disk drive

Sometime the above tips will not work for your computer. In that, cases you need to check your hard disk drive. The normal hard disk drive has a life span, and the hard drive performance decreases with time. If your hard drive is aged, then it is time to buy a new hard drive for your computer.

A new hard drive will speed up computer performance. I suggest you buy SSD (Solid State Drive), which will give you better performance than the older HDD. SSD is faster than the normal HDD (Hard Disk Drive).

14. Restart the computer

This one is a unique tip. By rebooting a computer, you can comfortably speed up computer performance. It is like taking a break, to get refresh and more energetic.
